My sweet grandpa passed away this morning. It was his time, and I am glad that he has been able to reunite with siblings and parents. He lived a long, full life. Taught and touched many. Grandpa in one word: passionate.
A few of my memories...
- When we lived in Texas, my parents would go to Cancun Mexico every fall for vacation. One year, my grandpa (was bribed or volunteered, not sure which) came to watch all 5 of us. Sunday morning came and we all got ready and headed to church. We were the only ones there. Where was everyone? Turns out it was the weekend of daylight savings. We were to turn our clocks back an hour, but didn't. We all sat there for an hour waiting for church to start. Most on time I have ever been to a church meeting. Thanks grandpa.
- Whenever I would see grandpa he would grab my hand, kiss it, and say "precious" He was always a smooth talkin' man. (I think that is how he managed to to be so spoiled by his daughters) They knew just what he liked- cologne, over the calf gold toe socks, and a box of Sees chocolates.
- I am a smell person. I know the smell of my grandpa's house, along with his office and rooms of books and writings. Anyone who knows grandpa knows his love of the written word. He himself has written pages and pages of family history, letters, and philosophical discourses. Grandpa is the smell of leather bound books and aftershave.
- As much as he loved writing and reading, he loved music. And he would play that music loud. I can see him sitting downstairs, reclined in his recliner right next to the big sound system blasting his music (anything from Celine Deon, to Il Divo, to latin music he didn't even understand). I love that he made Mix CDs for my mom of his latest favorite tunes. :)
Rock on. ;)
Although there is sadness for those he left behind, especially my sweet grandma. I think there is more happiness in death like his. We know he is comfortable and pain free now, which is comforting after so much pain for so long. He will be missed, but I know that we all will be together again.
Last time I saw grandpa- doing his exercises in the pool. Thumbs up.
