I LOVE people from different countries. Shoot, I have lived in two foreign countries, and grew up a stone's throw away from another country. I love talking with them, or listening to then try to tell a story! I love to hear their bizarre grammatical errors, or help them think of a word that they have forgotten. I have been the foreigner, and I am sure that people were just as amused by my accent or misuse of a word. Now, that said, there is one place foreigners should not work: a call center. Due to a series of annoying events, I was forced to call a 1800 number. Ash answered in his VERY thick accent. Which I would normally find intriguing and interesting... but NOT when I am trying to figure out how this company got my credit card information, and charged my account for a magazine subscription to Entertainment Weekly. So, Ash and I tried so hard to converse and work out my problem. The bigger problem came when I could not understand a word he was trying to say. "Can you spell that?" I ask. Ash spells it. (Still don't get it... what he spelled was NOT a word). "Umm.. I am sorry, I don't know that word, can you spell it again?" Ash proceeded to spell it again, still no help. "I am sorry, but I cannot understand." CLICK. HE HUNG UP ON ME! When I called back and spoke with his buddy Amer, I was not as friendly. If I ever live in Hungry, or any foreign country where they don't speak English as the mother tongue...I will never put my application in at the local call center. I promise!

ReplyDeleteSweetie: Sorry that I'm not very consistent in reading your blog. I really do enjoy your entries, and yes, I've had similar experiences with off-shore call centers. Thanks for keeping us informed on your life. Love You, Paps
