Memorial Day Weekend...ups and downs...

What a fabulous weekend,  well week actually.  My third year of teaching has come to an end! (yahoo)  I am looking forward to a long summer. This weekend was a great start.  I got to spend a lot of time with my cute husband, which is a treat.
Friday night we saw the new Robin Hood.  It was good, beautiful scenery!  Saturday morning we drove down to Mapleton to cheer Rhett and Alison on.   They participated in a 5k in honor of a little girl who was killed in an accident. It is really neat to see a community come together for a cause.  About 600 people ran.  Alison and Rhett did awesome!  Afterwards Tate and Hunter both ran in races.  Tate took 2nd in his age group.  It was way cute to see the proud little Tate bolt across that finish line.  When he finished he asked Rhett, "Why didn't I get to jump over any hurdles?" haha  Hunter had to run a half mile for his race! I was surprised how quickly those little legs of his finished up that race! :) After the run we indulged ourselves at IHOP, then went home and crashed. (I love napping with a full belly... must have learned that as a baby, old habits die hard.)  Later on, after the IHOP hangover wore off, we hiked the Y together, then spent the night studying (well Andrew did).  Sunday was perfect... church, naps, and good food. :)

Memorial Day started with a ward breakfast.  Pancakes, eggs, ham, and hash browns just taste better when cooked outside on a the grill. Yumm.   We went for bike ride.  We parked near the bottom of Hobble Creek, then rode to the top and back down (24 miles).  Of course on the way down we stopped at the Robisons and enjoyed visiting with them.
After we finished our ride, Andrew wanted to take some pictures at the Grotto up Payson canyon.  (We hiked there last Memorial Day with the Robisons.)  We made it to the Grotto and Andrew got some great pictures. He climbed up a bit higher, above the waterfall.  I was watching from below when I saw his pride and joy (his camera) take a tumble.  It kept tumbling down down down, into the river. I cried. Not because I care too much about the camera, but because I know how much Andrew LOVES his camera.  The lens had snapped off, memory card flew out.  All three in the water. We retrieved them all. After blow drying the camera, we assessed the damaged.  Memory Card:  working (miracle), battery pack:  working,  lens and filter:  destroyed, Canon Rebel XTi: ruined.

I learned a lot about Andrew's character yesterday.  He is such a good person.  I could think of come choice words I would say and a big tantrum I would throw if my favorite toy was destroyed in front of my eyes. He, on the other hand,  was just grateful that it hadn't hit the family below.  He was glad that a nice man helped us get it out.  He was calm and collected.       (Although I knew he was so upset inside). This morning, the very first thing out of his mouth: "I am sorry I broke the camera."  I laughed.

Last PIcture Ever Taken With the Rebel... (RIP) ;)

  3. Andrew, I was saddened to hear of the death of 'rebel', as I know how your photography is an extension of you love for nature. I trust that you will some way find another. Kristen, I truly love your blog, and how you share your life with others. Keep writing and entertaining us! Love Paps

secondly... awesome Memorial day festivities... you guys really know how to rock the national holidays, baby!

and thirdly... my heart is weeping for you and the Rebel... oh my gosh, seriously- I have already broken my own daughter's fingers (only three of them) for merely TOUCHING my camera and it's nothing near as awesome as Andrew's "baby"... i honestly don't want to even think about it shattering in front of you guys...

    oh. i weep.

Seriously, he's such a talented photographer... really really good eye!

You'll have to let me know what you guys get to replace ol' Canon (Nikon maybe?)

  5. Oh Katherine!! I love you- SO... the Rebel has been replaced by a Canon 30D (he has fallen even deeper in love) .... it's funny because Andrew used to be a Nikon man, he converted last summer when he sold his D100 to purchase the rebel...he said, " The Canon fits better." I think he is referring to the size of his hand... or maybe the strap around his neck ;) Who knows!
